Under the subscription model, you don't pay once and get to use the software forever. But if the old version still satisfies your needs, you are under no obligation to pay more and adopt the upgrade. Often, if you already own the product, they will sell you the "new" version at a discount. If you want the improved software version, it is almost like buying the product anew. However, if the manufacturer subsequently improves the software, you don't automatically receive the upgrade. In this non-subscription model you pay once for the software and can keep using it forever at no additional cost. This almost the perfect definition of software that is the complete opposite of a subscription model.

If you do ever upgrade remember that the davidkelly" code will get you a 15% discount: A more attractive proposition if you have the other Topaz products. Their Photo Upgrade option is $99 i believe covers DeNoise/Sharpen/Gigapixel and Mask AI. Their pricing is also geared towards making users who have several plugins more attractive.

So as with the usual perpetual licence approach, you keep the version that is working until the new version offers you something you like. You get 12 months upgrades including major releases. You avoid the cliff edge version changes which the less well informed can suffer if they don't know when major versions are going to be released and purchase V2 a couple of months before V3 is released. Topaz use a slight modification of the perpetual licence model which actually seems to be of benefit to users. If, or when, it gets a really substantial new release, I'll probably buy a subscription after the inevitable half dozen bug fix releases. So that just leaves Sharpen AI, which I do still use, but not very often. I have three of the AI apps, but find little use for Gigapixel, and DeNoise has been completely outclassed by DeepPRIME. My notion is to consider buying a Topaz upgrade subscription every couple of years or so, but only for the apps I'm still using. I'll stick with my current version of DeNoise AI which works for me. The only Topaz product I have is DeNoise AI, which I use as a plugin to LR and PS. I don't expect to buy any future upgrades to DeNoise AI unless they do something really spectacular, but might eventually buy an upgrade to Sharpen AI, which I do use occasionally. If you also use other Topaz AI (Artefact Inventor) products, you can cap the upgrade subscription at $100 for them all. If you're not already using PhotoLab 4 with DeepPRIME (which renders DeNoise AI completely redundant), wait till there's a major new release.

This very minor upgrade certainly doesn't seem worth paying for. Given that the current version of DeNoise AI seems to be working just fine for me, I can't really see that this is good value. This strikes me as almost like a subscription model. I've just received an email offering me a 1 year upgrade plan for $49, which would allow me to upgrade to v2.4.
